March & April Events Recap

Rations for Riches Breakfast
On Thursday, March, 24, 2011 guests of the ADF’s annual Rations for Riches event could only imagine the breathtaking view that would normally have been enjoyed at our annual benefit breakfast for diabetes at the Calgary Tower. On any other day, guests would have experienced the serenity of feasting on an award-winning breakfast, while taking in the breathtaking views of our city and the morning light. However this year Mother Nature had her own agenda and the only thing to be seen from the top of the Calgary Tower was rain and fog. However, despite the weather, spirits were high and the second annual Rations for Riches benefit breakfast proved to be a tremendous success.

Guests had an opportunity to learn first hand about the daily struggles associated with diabetes as keynote speaker Dr. Brad Kane talked about his family and what life is like living with their 4 year old daughter Cadence (aka Princess Cadence) who was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when she was only 8 months old. The Kane’s story is just one of millions just like it- innocent people falling victim to this terrible disease. Each looking for an ounce of hope that may one day erase diabetes from their reality.

Thank you to all our guests, and the many generous contributors that helped to make this year’s Rations for Riches benefit breakfast a success: the Sky 360 Restaurant and Lounge, the Calgary Tower, First Student Canada and Cardinal Lines, Highwood Crossing Farms, Crickle Creek Coffee Co., Kabloom Flowers, Hotel Arts, Tri Executive Group, the Lougheed House, Kananaskis Helicopter Tours, and our good friends at CTV and the CBC Calgary Eyeopener.   Thank you all for your support!

Special thanks also goes out to Anne Mackay, Kaitlyn Hansen, Rebecca Dickson, Kelly Nicolson and Nicole McMahon for the time, dedication, heart and soul that they put into planning and executing this event. Thank you ladies!

Stay tuned for details surrounding the 3rd annual Rations for Riches benefit breakfast scheduled for March 2012!

Frank Flaman Foundation Gala
On April 1st the ADF was the fortunate recipient of a $20,000.00 cheque thanks to the generosity of the Frank Flaman Foundation. Each year the foundation holds a dinner, dance and auction and donates the proceeds to a number of charities in the Edmonton area. This year’s event was held at The Westin Hotel and was host to over 400 guests. Volunteers and staff from the Alberta Diabetes Foundation were on hand to help with the silent and live auction, raffles and registration and payment desks. Many thanks to the Frank Flaman Foundation and Flaman family for their bigheartedness as well as to everyone who came out and supported this fantastic annual event!

Jeans & Jersey
The Co-operators 7th Annual Jeans & Jersey Dinner and Auction was held at the Sawmill Banquet & Catering Centre on Saturday, April 9th. Guests enjoyed a barbeque chicken and rib buffet, exciting auctions and several games of chance with one lucky guest winning an exciting trip to the Cayman Islands! CTV’s Josh Classen was our outstanding Master of Ceremonies and local TV and radio personality Mark Scholz had the crowd in stitches throughout his stint as Live Auctioneer. Joey Moss of the Edmonton Oilers, Kyle Koch of the Edmonton Eskimos and Amanda and Jac of the Oilers Octane were also in attendance and helped enhance the sports-themed atmosphere of the event.

Thank you to all our guests, and the many generous contributors that helped to make this year’s Jeans & Jersey a success: The Co-operators, Canadian Western Bank, CTV, The Team 1260, The Bear, RED The Agency, Cameron Homes Inc., Contava Inc.

Special thanks to our volunteer committee members Carl Knowler, Maria Skog, Kevin Vandeven, Jocelyn Graham and Angela Saveraux for their time and dedication they put into planning and executing this event.
