Diabetes net PLAY: a physical activity website and e-counselling interventions for individuals with type II diabetes.
Research has shown that lifestyle changes can delay and prevent diabetes related complications. This pilot study will examine the feasibility and preliminary efficacy of an internet based counselling intervention on physical activity behaviour in individuals with type II diabetes (T2DM). The experimental group will receive: a) access to study website that will post weekly messages operationalizing constructs from the Social Cognitive Theory b) counselling via email and c) website links to the Canadian Diabetes Association's physical activity guidelines and Health Canada's Physical Activity Guide while the control group will receive only the website links. This study will show us if the internet and email are realistic and effective ways to help T2DM individuals to change their physical activity behaviours. The resulsts will also provide health care workers and agencies with an alternative method of delivering health information to people, who otherwise, might not have access to such services.
