Wills and Bequests

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

Ongoing, intensive research is needed to support world-leading research so that all diabetics can eventually lead normal lives, free from insulin injection/oral medications and the devastating complications of diabetes.

A charitable donation through your Will is just one way that you can make a difference in the lives of diabetics. Your gift will directly fund critical research that will find a cure!

MAKE A BEQUEST

Unfortunately, death is something that we have no control over and it can happen early or late in our lives. Many people in their 20's, 30's and 40's have Wills.

Whatever your reasons, preparing a Will is relatively painless. A lawyer can help you prepare the appropriate papers and the cost is reasonable, depending on the size and complexity of your estate.

A bequest in your Will could mean that you would be able to give your loved ones far more than you might realize.
Taking advantage of the charitable tax credit provides significant tax savings to your estate.

WHY ADF

You will be helping a worthwhile cause fund world-leading research.
Ongoing research is critical to finding a cure for diabetes, but this research is very expensive so your support will make a difference. Your gift will provide future funds that will be used to develop not only a better way of life for diabetics but ultimately lead to a CURE. So when you are thinking about preparing a Will, please consider a bequest to ADF.

WHY YOU NEED A WILL

If you don't have a Will you should consider making one.
A Will is a legal document that details how you want your property to be distributed when you die. It allows you to provide for family and friends according to your wishes, sparing them conflict, expense and inconvenience later on. If you die "intestate" (without a Will) provincial courts determine where your assets will be distributed. So it's very important to have an up-to-date Will.

Perhaps you have been thinking of preparing a Will for some time but have been putting it off for a variety of reasons. After all, it is not easy to think of your own mortality.

Other common misconceptions may include the following: "I'm not rich. Only wealthy people need a Will."
This is not true. Everyone has accumulated assets over a lifetime that are worth something such as a house, car, furnishings, collectables, etc. If you were to sell all of your possessions they are likely worth far more than you imagined.

"I'm still young. I don't need a Will yet."
Wills are not just for the elderly.

CHARITABLE BEQUESTS

Electing to bequest ADF in your will after your family, friends and others is simple and straightforward. You can include ADF as a beneficiary by amending your present Will or by drawing up a new Will. A gift of a bequest can be a sum of money, stocks and bonds or a portion of your estate the choice is yours.
Before your Will is drawn up you should discuss the terms of your bequest with us to ensure your wishes can be met. Your lawyer or financial advisor can explain all of the tax advantages you are entitled to as a direct result of your bequest to ADF.

The following is only a sample of the wording you can use when preparing your Will:

"I ______ give to ADF, 8602 112 Street, Edmonton, AB, T6G 2E1, the gift of $_____, or ___% of the residue of my estate, after expenses and the disposition of other named bequests; the Board of Directors of said foundation will determine use of the above said funds if not pre-specified by myself."

*Please note the above wording is just a suggested format, please consult with legal counsel for exact wording prior to writing your will.

TAX ADVANTAGES

Giving generously can make a real difference when tax time comes around as charitable donations are deducted directly from taxes.

If a donor makes a charitable bequest his or her estate can claim a contribution for the full value of the bequest in the year of the donor's death, subject to the ceiling percentage on charitable contributions for that year. An accountant or a financial advisor can advise you on how tax advantage specifics will benefit you.
